Free Legal Help for Residents of Virginia

For people with a legal problem seeking answers, the Loudoun County Public Library may be a good place to start. The system includes a law library located at 18 E Market Street, Leesburg. It is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. It provides customers with accurate and practical legal information. Reference services are available by phone, email, or in person. While staff cannot provide legal services or advice, they can help you research legal issues and search for legal forms and documents. Borrowing is limited to licensed Virginia attorneys who may also apply for “after hours" access to the law library.

The resources include:

  • Copyright Information. You may consult trained staff about forms to register copyrights or trademarks.

  • Forms. The library also provides access to the Gale Legal Forms database, and you can access legal, business, and personal forms and template documents, including those specific to Virginia.

  • Small Business Information. A small business resource center allows you to research all aspects of business operations.

  • Virginia law, including cases, statutes, administrative codes, and templates. The library also includes access to Westlaw Next, where you can search federal and state legal research materials, including case law, states, court rules, administrative codes, forms, law reviews, and journals.

In addition to the conventional research materials, there are worktables for customer use, a privacy pod for confidential meetings and Internet access, and Microsoft Word at three public computer stations.

With the Hein Online Date base, you can access 3,200 scholarly journals and search the archives of Virginia statutes and case law.

For those wanting to prepare for their visit, the collection may be searched at catalog.libraryloudoun.gov and filtered by the locations on the left of the screen.

Library cards are free to all Loudoun County residents or anyone who attends school, works, or owns property in Loudoun County. Residents of neighboring jurisdictions may also be eligible. You can reach the library at 703-777-0695.
